A glacial mountain lake in the High Tatras with a walking path around the shore and peaks reflected on calm mornings. Trails to higher tarns start here, so bring layers as the weather changes quickly.

Štrbské Pleso lies at 1,319 metres in the High Tatras and is named after the lake of the same name, a glacial lake. The resort began in 1872, when Jozef Szentiványi built a hunting lodge here; the rack railway arrived in 1896 and the first ski school in 1899. Next to it lies the pond Nové Štrbské Pleso, created in 1900 by damming the Mlynica brook. Winter sports facilities and the ski jumps shape the resort.

Popular hikes to Kriváň and Rysy start here. An hour is enough for a stroll around the lake itself. Getting here: about 16 km west of Poprad by car, or by rack railway from Štrba or the Tatra Electric Railway from Poprad. Weather in the high mountains can change quickly, so bring warm clothing. It is usually quieter in the morning.
