A pink-stone hill town of steep lanes, Roman gates and doorways lined with flowerpots. Park below the walls and climb through the old centre; the upper streets give wide views over the Umbrian plain.

Spello was founded under Emperor Augustus as Colonia Iulia Hispellum. From Roman times the town gates of Porta Consolare and Porta Venere survive, the latter with its twelve-sided towers, the Properzio Towers, along with the Arch of Augustus and long stretches of the ancient town wall, built of carefully dressed limestone blocks. In the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Baglioni Chapel, also known as the Cappella Bella, contains frescoes by Pinturicchio from around 1500.

Spello is known for its flowers. At Corpus Christi, carpets of petals, the Infiorate, cover the lanes, and a museum of its own is devoted to the tradition. The town lies in the province of Perugia in Umbria, and a walk of about two hours is enough to get to know its old centre.
