A set of marble steps on the Zadar waterfront with pipes beneath them that make soft, shifting tones as waves pass through. Sit on the steps around sunset and listen, then walk on to the nearby sun-themed light installation.

The Sea Organ was designed by the architect Nikola Bašić and opened in 2005. It consists of white marble steps about 70 m long, with 35 pipes beneath them. When waves roll in, they push air through the pipes, and the sound escapes through small openings in the stone. The tones are modelled on chords from Dalmatian musical tradition.

Right next to it is the “Greeting to the Sun”, a solar-powered light installation, also designed by Bašić, which glows after sunset. Access is free. Sunset is the most atmospheric time but also the busiest; for a quieter listen, go early in the morning. The steps can be slippery. Allow about an hour.
