A Renaissance castle on a hill above Innsbruck, home to a collection of curiosities and armour assembled by a Habsburg archduke. Wander the courtyards and park, and plan an hour or two for the rooms.

Schloss Ambras in Innsbruck is closely associated with Archduke Ferdinand II (1529 to 1595) and his wife Philippine Welser, the daughter of an Augsburg merchant. Because of the difference in social rank, the marriage initially had to be kept secret. Ferdinand II established a collection here that is regarded as the world's first museum. The Kunstkammer, or cabinet of art and curiosities, displayed crystals, silver, gold, glass and rare natural objects, along with armour, weapons and paintings. Today's highlights include the armouries, the Spanish Hall, Philippine Welser's bathroom and the Strasser glass collection. In the summer months a gallery of Habsburg portraits is also open.

Allow one to two hours for the rooms and leave time for the castle park. The castle stands on a hill on the edge of Innsbruck. Check how to get there and where to park before you set out.
