A walled hill town whose medieval stone towers still rise above the rooftops. Leave the car in the car parks below the gates, walk up the main street to the squares, and come in the evening when the day-trippers have left.

San Gimignano lies in Tuscany, about 40 km south-west of Florence as the crow flies, and in the Middle Ages was a stage on the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome. Wealthy families built around 72 fortified tower houses here as a display of their power; 14 of them still stand. The Torre Grossa was completed in 1311 and is 54 m high. The old town, with its two main squares, Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.

Allow about half a day to explore the lanes. The Collegiata and other churches preserve frescoes from the 14th and 15th centuries, including works by Ghirlandaio, Benozzo Gozzoli and Taddeo di Bartolo. If you arrive by motorhome or car, it is best to leave the vehicle outside the town walls and walk in. The streets are quieter early in the morning or in the evening.
