A landscaped path along the river, a level below the street, passing cafes, bridges and stone steps in the heart of downtown. Walk it in the morning or evening, when it is quieter and cooler.

After the flood of 1921, in which 51 people died, the architect Robert Hugman drew up the plan for the River Walk in 1929. Beginning in 1938, the project used WPA funds to build about 3 miles (5 km) of paths and some twenty bridges. The original downtown section is about 2.5 miles (4 km) long, and its walkways lie one level below the street. Extensions followed: in 1968 to the Tower of the Americas, in 1981 the Paseo del Alamo, and in 2009 the Museum Reach with the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Pearl brewery.

The Mission Reach, about 8 miles (13 km) long and completed by 2013, runs south to Mission Espada. It links downtown with four Spanish missions that, together with the Alamo, have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. Allow one to two hours for the downtown section. The center is usually quietest in the early morning.
