The smallest town in Austria by area, squeezed between the Inn river and a rock face, with narrow lanes and glass workshops. Park outside the old centre and walk in, then browse the shops for hand-blown glass.

Rattenberg on the River Inn is regarded as the smallest town in Austria: around 400 people live on roughly ten hectares. The town is first mentioned in documents in 1254, and in the Middle Ages it was a trading and customs post on the river. Today almost the whole town is a pedestrian zone, made up of just seven streets. The nail-smiths' houses recall the craft in which around 2,000 nails a day were produced until 1912. Rattenberg is known for glass art: the Kisslinger Kristallglas house shows mouth-blown glass, crystal and engraving across three floors.

The Augustinian Museum, a former monastery, displays Tyrolean art from nine centuries; its church tower is said to be the only one in Tyrol that can be climbed. From the castle ruins you look out over the town. One to two hours is enough for a tour. Park outside the old town and walk in.
