A town at the foot of the Harz with well over a thousand half-timbered houses, narrow lanes and a castle hill above the market. Wander the side streets rather than only the square, and leave the car at the edge.

Quedlinburg lies north of the Harz mountains on the River Bode in Saxony-Anhalt, at an altitude of around 123 metres. The town was first mentioned in 922 and was a royal residence where the Ottonian rulers celebrated Easter. From 936 a convent for noblewomen existed for almost 900 years. The town has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994; the historic core has over 2,100 half-timbered houses from eight centuries.

On the Schlossberg above the town rises the collegiate church of St Servatius. On the market square stand the Renaissance town hall and the Roland statue, a symbol of market freedom; parts of the town wall with several towers also survive. Allow half a day to a full day for the market, the lanes and the Schlossberg. Park on the edge of the old town, as the lanes are narrow.
