A cliff-top Civil War memorial park above the Tennessee River bend, with wide views toward Chattanooga. Walk the short loop of overlooks and monuments, and arrive early since parking is limited.

Point Park is a memorial park of about 4 hectares (10 acres) on Lookout Mountain and part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, the first and largest of its kind (established 1890). From here you look out over Chattanooga, the Tennessee River and Moccasin Bend. On November 24, 1863, the "Battle Above the Clouds" took place on the northern slopes, in which Union troops under General Joseph Hooker took the slopes.

A paved path leads past signs, monuments and gun positions. The largest monument is the New York Peace Monument, dedicated to peace and reconciliation between veterans of both sides. The Ochs Memorial Observatory has exhibits on Civil War signaling and photography, among other topics. About an hour is enough for the walk. Try to come early in the day; the National Park Service can advise on parking for long vehicles.
