A long wooden boardwalk trail along the Paiva River gorge near Arouca, with river views, rapids and steep granite slopes. Wear walking shoes, bring water and check the weather, as sections can close in bad conditions.

The Passadiços do Paiva are a wooden boardwalk trail along the River Paiva near Arouca. It is about 8 kilometres long (one way) and takes 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on your pace. Most of the effort comes from the long flights of steps, and the difficulty is rated as moderate. The start and end points are Areinho and Espiunca, so many walkers go downhill.

Optionally you can add the 516-metre suspension bridge “516 Arouca”, one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world, with views into the valley. Check booking and current opening before you go: booking may be required in high season, and sections can be closed in bad weather. Bring plenty of water, as drinking fountains are rare, and wear non-slip footwear. Spring and autumn are ideal; in summer avoid the midday heat and start early.
