# Lungomare Opatija

A coastal promenade of several kilometres linking Opatija with neighbouring fishing villages, passing villas, small beaches and rocky stretches. Walk a section in the late afternoon and use the buses to return to your car.

The Lungomare, officially the Emperor Franz Joseph I Promenade, is about 12 km long and links Volosko with Lovran via Opatija, Ičići and Ika. It was built in two stages: the northern section from Volosko to Opatija was finished in 1889, the year Opatija was officially declared a health resort; the link to Lovran followed in 1911. Along the way you pass Belle Époque villas, Villa Angiolina with its park and the statue “The Girl with the Seagull”, with small pebble coves in between.

You do not have to walk the whole route. A stretch, for example between Opatija and Volosko, is easily done in one to two hours; the light is pleasant in the late afternoon, and in summer trees provide shade. For the way back you can use the local buses on the coastal road.
