A whitewashed walled town with flower-draped lanes leading up to a castle, and ramparts you can walk for views over the tiled roofs. Arrive early or late to avoid the day-trip crowds in the main street.

Óbidos lies about 88 kilometres north of Lisbon, roughly an hour by car. The town walls are 1,565 metres long and can be walked; stairs lead up at three points, including at the Porta da Vila gate. The wall walk has no handrail, so take care. From the gate, Rua Direita, lined with crafts and flower-decked windows, runs up to the castle, which is now a hotel.

South of the town runs an aqueduct about three kilometres long, built on the orders of Queen Catherine in 1573. The medieval centre is easily explored in a day. It gets crowded in summer (medieval fair in July and August) and at Christmas time (Christmas Village); outside those periods it is usually quieter. Come early or late in the day to avoid the crowds on the main street. There is parking just outside the walls.
