A museum of historic locomotives and railcars from the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and other lines, with a depot and shop in Carson City. Check the calendar for days when the trains run on the short track.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City has been open since 1980 and preserves locomotives, passenger cars and freight cars from various Nevada railroads, including many pieces from the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. Highlights include the locomotive Inyo (1875) and No. 25, which runs under steam at special events. The historic depot from Wabuska was moved to the museum grounds and now serves as the station where tickets for the museum's train rides are sold.

Besides the exhibits, there are train rides and handcar rides on the museum's track, as well as lectures and special events. The railway has both standard-gauge and 3-foot narrow-gauge track (about 4.8 miles / 7.7 km in total). Steam trains run only on selected weekends, holidays and special event days, so check the museum's event calendar before you go. Allow about two hours for the museum and a ride.
