A huge aviation museum next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, with aircraft from early biplanes to modern jets in several hangars. Entry is free; allow at least half a day and start with the early-aviation hangar.

The museum is on the grounds of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Dayton. It displays more than 350 aircraft and missiles across roughly 19 acres (77,000 m²) of indoor exhibit space and draws more than 800,000 visitors a year. The galleries are arranged chronologically, from the pioneers of flight through World War II and the Cold War to spaceflight and stealth technology.

Among the best-known pieces are the B-17F "Memphis Belle," the B-29 "Bockscar," the XB-70 Valkyrie, and the Apollo 15 command module. The Presidential Gallery holds aircraft used by U.S. presidents, including SAM 26000. Allow half a day to a full day. It works best to start with the early aviation hall and work your way through chronologically. Before you travel, check the current opening hours and access rules on the museum's website.
