A small lakeside town and sailing hub of the Masurian Lakes, with a harbour promenade, fish restaurants and boat trips on Lake Śniardwy and nearby lakes. Visit in summer for sailing and swimming, and book accommodation early in July and August.

Mikołajki lies in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship on Lake Mikołajskie, close to Lake Śniardwy, the largest lake in Masuria and in Poland. The town was first mentioned in 1444 as Nickelsdorf, its name deriving from Saint Nicholas; it received town rights in 1726. After the Second World War it passed to Poland and was one of the few Masurian towns not destroyed in the fighting. It has about 3,300 inhabitants.

Mikołajki is regarded as the sailing capital of Poland and is one of Masuria's biggest tourist destinations. Ice sailing is practised here in winter. The best time for sailing and swimming is summer, with mild temperatures (a July average high of around 24 °C). Book accommodation early for July and August. Allow half a day to a full day for the harbour promenade and a boat trip; expect it to be very busy in high-summer weeks.
