Metsovo lies in the Pindus Mountains in Epirus at 1,160 m, between Ioannina to the west and Meteora to the east. The town, with around 2,500 inhabitants, is regarded as the main centre of Aromanian (Vlach) life in Greece. Benefactors such as George Averoff, who helped found the National Technical University of Athens, came from Metsovo. In October 1912, during the First Balkan War, Greek troops attacked the Ottoman garrison here.

The area is known for the cheeses Metsovone and Metsovela and for the wines of the Katogi estate, owned by the Averoff family. The town has several museums, monasteries and churches, and nearby are the Pindos National Park (Valia Calda) and Lake Aoos Springs. You can arrive via National Road 6 or the Egnatia Odos motorway.
