A lakeside town on Lake Constance, with a lower quay and an upper old town linked by steep lanes, and a medieval castle above the water. Come in the evening for soft light on the lake and the Alps beyond.

Meersburg lies on the northern shore of Lake Constance between Friedrichshafen and Überlingen. The town is divided into a lower town by the water and an upper town, with a height difference of around 40 metres between them. The Steigstraße links the two and passes the Bear Fountain of 1929. Above it all stands the Old Castle, regarded as the oldest fully preserved and inhabited castle in Germany; it was the residence of the prince-bishops of Constance until the New Palace was completed in 1750.

Allow half a day for the old town and the castle. The Baroque New Palace was begun in 1710 and shapes the town's skyline. The poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff died in the Old Castle in 1848, and a museum commemorates her. During the day the car ferry to Konstanz runs roughly every 15 minutes, which suits a round trip of the lake. Wear sturdy shoes for the steep Steigstraße.
