A hilltop castle above the old town with a tower, courtyards and sweeping city views, reached by funicular or a steep footpath. Plan an hour or two, and walk down into the river-front lanes afterwards.

Ljubljana Castle sits on Castle Hill above the old town. It was probably built in the 11th century; it acquired its present form through an almost complete rebuilding in the 15th century, and most of its buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries. From the early 14th century it was the seat of the Lords of Carniola. St George's Chapel was built in the 15th century and the viewing tower in 1848, so that a watchman could fire cannon to warn of fires or announce important events. Later the castle served as an arsenal, barracks, military hospital and prison, among other things.

Today it is a cultural centre with exhibitions and concerts. You can reach it by the funicular, which has run since December 2006, or by a steep footpath. Allow one to two hours, then walk down to the lanes along the river.
