A deep glacial lake squeezed between two steep, wooded mountains, Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor. Swim or paddle from the public beach at the south end, or hike up Pisgah for the view down the water.

Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont, is about 8 km (5 miles) long, about 1.6 km (1 mile) wide and more than 90 m (300 feet) deep. It is considered the deepest lake lying entirely within Vermont. A glacier carved the basin in the heavily fractured rock between Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor, which frame the lake with steep cliffs. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliffs. The lake has been a National Natural Landmark since 1967, and its shoreline is reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord.

For swimming and paddling there are two public beaches, one on the north shore and one at South Bay. More than 100 bird species have been observed around the lake. Allow half a day, longer if you climb Mount Pisgah. On summer weekends arrive early to find space on the beach, and be aware of possible trail closures.
