A hill village of brightly painted Revival-era houses with stone bridges and cobbled streets, preserved as an open-air town. Wander the lanes on foot and pick a warm, dry day for the uphill streets.

Koprivshtitsa lies at an altitude of 1,030 m in the Sredna Gora mountains, about 110 km east of Sofia. In 1876 the town was one of the centres of the April Uprising; the first shot was fired at the Kalachev Bridge. It preserves the character of the Bulgarian National Revival period: 383 architectural monuments stand here, and the town is regarded as an architectural reserve. They include the Oslekov House, now an ethnographic museum, several memorial houses for insurgents, two 19th-century churches and an ossuary from 1926.

Since 1965 the National Festival of Bulgarian Folklore has been held roughly every five years. With about 2,400 inhabitants (2011 census), the town is small and easy to explore on foot; allow three to four hours for a tour and one or two museums. Comfortable shoes and dry weather are advisable. Expect large crowds during the festival.
