A small Vistula town of Renaissance merchant houses around a market square, popular with artists, with a ruined castle and tower above. Climb to the viewpoint over the river, try the local rooster-shaped bread and park at the edge of town.

Kazimierz Dolny lies on the east bank of the Vistula, about 50 km from Lublin, and has some 2,500 inhabitants. The settlement goes back to an 11th-century Benedictine foundation; in 1181 Duke Casimir II handed it to Premonstratensian nuns, and the town is named after him. Grain trade on the Vistula in the 16th and 17th centuries brought the wealth for its Renaissance buildings, including granaries. When the trade collapsed, the townscape remained largely unchanged; it has been a Monument of History since 1994 and is now also popular with artists.

Above the town, the castle ruins, dating from the 14th to 16th centuries, and the Hill of the Three Crosses (Góra Trzech Krzyży, in memory of the victims of an epidemic, erected in 1708) offer views. Allow half a day. It gets very busy in high season and on summer weekends. The market square with its well lies in the centre and is easy to explore on foot.
