A hilltop hamlet in central Istria, often called the smallest town in the world, with a ring of stone walls and one main street. Stop for a short walk along the lanes and look out over the fields from the town gate.

Hum stands at 349 m above sea level in the interior of Istria and belongs to the municipality of Buzet. The settlement is first mentioned in 1102 as “Cholm”; the bell and clock tower dates from 1552 and the parish Church of the Assumption of Mary from 1802. To the west the village is enclosed by a wall, while on the other sides the houses are built into the defensive walls. The 2021 census counted 52 residents, which is why some people rank Hum among the smallest towns in the world.

Hum also preserves Glagolitic wall inscriptions from the second half of the 12th century, an early testimony to Croatian written culture. A stroll through the lanes takes about an hour. Go early in the day or in the late afternoon, when fewer coaches are around, and leave your vehicle outside the village centre.
