# Hluboká Castle

A white neo-Gothic château on a rock above the Vltava, surrounded by a landscaped park. The interiors are visited on guided tours, and the park path gives the best views of the facade; arrive early in summer.

Hluboká Chateau (Hluboká nad Vltavou) began in the mid-13th century as a royal guard fortress. In 1561 the Lords of Hradec bought the estate and had the Gothic castle rebuilt as a Renaissance chateau. From 1661 it belonged to the Schwarzenbergs, who changed it in two major rebuilds, the last between 1840 and 1871 in the Romantic neo-Gothic style. The model was Windsor Castle, which Prince Johann Adolf II and Princess Eleonore had seen on their travels in England. The architects involved were Franz Beer and Damasius Deworetzky.

The Schwarzenberg family kept the chateau until 1939, when the last owner emigrated; in 1947 they also lost it in law. Allow about two to three hours for the chateau and grounds.
