Hindeloopen lies on the IJsselmeer in Friesland and is one of the eleven Frisian cities of the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour). The town received its charter in 1225 and joined the Hanseatic League in 1368. Fewer than 900 people live there today. Maritime trade flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries; captains traded with Scandinavia, the Baltic and England and brought back timber. The trade route declined after Amsterdam gained direct access to the North Sea through the North Holland Canal in 1824.

Hindeloopen is known for its decorative painting, whose furniture and painted designs show influences from the Baltic and Asia. The Museum Hindeloopen tells the story of seafaring and local culture. In the narrow lanes you will find wooden bridges and captains' houses. A walk takes about one to two hours. Come in the shoulder season for a quieter visit and walk a little way along the dyke.
