A German-settled town on the Missouri River, with brick houses on a steep street grid and vineyards on the surrounding hills. Walk Main Street, visit a winery tasting room and consider the nearby Katy Trail for an easy ride.

Hermann was founded in 1837 by the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia and named after Hermann (Arminius), the Germanic chieftain who defeated Roman legions in AD 9. The town sits at an elevation of about 161 m (528 ft) on the south side of the Missouri River and had roughly 2,200 residents in 2020. The Hermann wine region was recognized in 1983 as one of the first American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), and Stone Hill is considered the largest winemaking business in the state.

Plan half a day to a full day: stroll the historic streets, visit a winery, and stop at one of the sausage makers, since Hermann calls itself the sausage-making capital of Missouri. Maifest (third weekend in May) and Oktoberfest (the first four weekends in October) draw big crowds, so arrive early on those dates. The Katy Trail, a bike path about 360 km (225 miles) long, passes through McKittrick on the opposite bank of the river.
