A beech forest south of Brussels known for its carpets of bluebells that colour the ground in spring. Visit on a weekday in the flowering season, as paths and parking fill quickly on dry weekends.

The Hallerbos covers 552 hectares, lies mostly near Halle in Flemish Brabant and extends with a small part into Walloon Brabant. It was once part of the Coal Forest (Silva Carbonaria) and was still linked to the Sonian Forest by strips of woodland in 1777. In the First World War the German occupiers felled most of the old trees; replanting took place between 1930 and 1950. It is famous for its carpet of bluebells, which covers the forest floor for a few weeks in spring.

The bloom usually falls in April, often peaking around the middle of the month; sunny areas flower first, the shaded valley slopes later. If you can, come on a weekday, as parking is limited and fills up quickly. During the bloom, free shuttle buses run from Halle at weekends and on public holidays (as of April 2026). Do stay on the paths, wear sturdy shoes and bring drinks, as there are no cafés in the forest.
