A hillside quarter where many people live in whitewashed cave homes, marked by chimneys poking from the bare earth. A small cave-house museum shows how they work, and the sunset light over the badlands is worth waiting for.

Guadix, in the province of Granada, is regarded as the European capital of inhabited caves: according to tourism sources, up to 2,000 cave homes are spread over about 200 hectares in the Barrio de las Cuevas. After the conquest of 1492, Moors are said to have withdrawn into the hills and dug their homes into the clay. Thanks to the layer of earth, the rooms stay at around 19 to 22 °C all year round.

The quarter has a visitor centre in a traditional cave home, and the Ermita Nueva, a church carved into the rock. The Cerro de la Magdalena viewpoint gives an overview of the town, the cave quarter and the Alcazaba. Allow one to two hours for the quarter; the 11th-century Alcazaba and the cathedral are close by. Towards evening the light over the hillside is especially beautiful.
