A wooded hill in the middle of Graz, topped by the clock tower that has become the city's emblem, with views over the red-tiled roofs. Walk up by the stairs or take the funicular, then wander down through the old town.

The Schlossberg in Graz is a wooded hill in the middle of the city, 473 m high, and today a public park with far-reaching views. There were fortifications here as early as the 10th century, and in the mid-16th century Italian master builders constructed the fortress. It was never captured, but after the Peace of Schönbrunn in 1809 it was largely razed by Napoleonic troops. The Clock Tower and Bell Tower were spared because the townspeople paid a ransom. On the Clock Tower the big hand shows the hours and the small one the minutes. The Bell Tower holds "Liesl", the heaviest bell in Graz.

You can reach the hill by funicular, by lift or on steep paths and steps. At the top there are cafés and restaurants and the Kasematten open-air stage. Inside the hill is a network of tunnels from the Second World War, partly open to visitors. Allow one to two hours and then walk down through the old town.
