A large Baroque palace with a park, known as a favourite residence of Empress Elisabeth. Allow time for the furnished rooms and the gardens, and check opening days before driving out from Budapest.

The Royal Palace of Gödöllő is regarded as the largest Baroque palace in Hungary. Count Antal Grassalkovich I had it built from around 1735. The palace had 136 rooms, 103 of them living quarters, and stands in a 26-hectare park with an English landscape garden. It became famous through Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”): after the palace was given to the royal couple as a coronation gift in 1867, she first visited Gödöllő on 11 May 1867, and her last stay was in October 1895.

After years of decay, the palace was restored and partly opened to visitors in 1996. Today it serves as a museum and event venue. A full renovation of palace and park, planned to take about nine years, is reported to have begun recently (as of October 2026).
