Ornate 19th-century commercial buildings now house shops, cafes and galleries a few blocks from the Gulf port. Walk the Strand, then continue to the seawall; summer weekends bring heavy traffic over the causeway.

The Strand in Galveston was the business center of the port city in the 19th century and was nicknamed the "Wall Street of the South"; in 1881 alone, businesses here handled about $38 million in sales. The oldest surviving buildings date from 1855 and 1858, and most were built in the 1870s and 1880s. Styles range from Greek Revival to Late Victorian to Beaux-Arts. The 1900 hurricane caused severe damage, after which the district declined until restoration began in the 1960s. It has been a National Historic Landmark since 1976.

Today the buildings hold museums, galleries, restaurants and shops. Allow one to three hours for a stroll. Well-known events include Mardi Gras and "Dickens on the Strand" in December, when it is especially crowded.
