A hillside town of nineteenth-century brick storefronts along Main Street, with antique shops, galleries and cafes. Walk the street and climb a side stair for views over the rooftops; summer weekends are busy.

Galena was founded in 1826 and grew up during the first great lead rush in the United States. Around 1845, according to Wikipedia, about 80 percent of American lead production came from Jo Daviess County, with Galena at its center. In the 1850s the city was an important river port, at times with as many as fifteen steamboats docked at once; it had about 14,000 residents then, compared with about 3,300 today. Ulysses S. Grant and eight other Civil War generals lived here; Grant's home is a state historic site.

Most of the buildings lie within the Galena Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Galena River repeatedly flooded the town; floodgates were installed in 1951. According to Wikipedia, the city draws well over a million visitors a year. Plan at least two to three hours for a walk along Main Street, and avoid weekends in high season if you can. Park once and continue on foot.
