Two leaning medieval towers standing together in the middle of Bologna, one noticeably more tilted than the other. You can climb the taller one for a view over the red rooftops; leave the car outside the traffic-limited centre.

The Due Torri, the Asinelli and Garisenda towers, were built between 1109 and 1119 and are the emblem of Bologna. The Asinelli Tower is 97.2 m tall and has 498 steps. The Garisenda Tower is much shorter, at around 48 m, and leans sharply because the ground and foundations have subsided. It was reduced to half its height in the 14th century. Dante mentions it in Canto XXXI of the "Inferno". Both towers stood for the power and prestige of the families who built them.

The towers stand on Piazza di Porta Ravegnana, at the start of the ancient Via Emilia. Both are currently closed to visitors (as of October 2026): the Garisenda is undergoing restoration because of the risk of collapse, the work is expected to last until at least 2028, and there is no fixed date for reopening the Asinelli. As an alternative, Bologna Welcome points to the Torre dell'Orologio, which offers a panoramic view over the city.
