A domed Baroque church rebuilt in the heart of Dresden's old town, with a surrounding square lined by historic facades. Climb the dome for a view across the rooftops and the Elbe.

The Frauenkirche in Dresden was built in the Baroque style between 1726 and 1743 to designs by George Bähr. After the air raids of February 1945, the dome collapsed on 15 February at 10 a.m. The ruin stood for around 45 years as a memorial. After German reunification, reconstruction began in 1994; it took eleven years, and the church was reconsecrated on 30 October 2005. More than 8,500 original stones were recovered, about 3,800 of them reused. The golden cross on the dome was made in London and is regarded as a symbol of reconciliation.

The church is an open house with services, devotions and concerts. A climb leads up the dome, with a view over the rooftops of the old town. Guided tours and audio guides explain the building and its reconstruction. Allow about one to two hours for the church and the dome. Park on the edge of the city centre and walk to the square in front of the church.
