A quiet moorland site east of Inverness where the last major battle on British soil was fought, now with a visitor centre and marked paths. Walk the field after seeing the exhibition, and bring a windproof layer.

On Culloden Moor, about 8 km east of Inverness, the army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was defeated by the Duke of Cumberland's forces on 16 April 1746. The National Trust for Scotland looks after the memorials: the Memorial Cairn of 1881, the clan graves, the Well of the Dead and the Cumberland Stone. There is also the restored Old Leanach Cottage. In the visitor centre, which opened in 2007, an exhibition explains the background to the battle and the Jacobite risings.

Visit the exhibition first and then walk the battlefield; allow two to three hours in all. The open moor is windy, so a windproof jacket is advisable. The drive from Inverness is short, and there is parking at the visitor centre.
