# Cube Houses

A cluster of tilted cube-shaped homes on stilts above a pedestrian street near the Old Harbour. Look at them from the square and the market hall nearby, and visit the small show-cube if you want to see inside.

The Cube Houses (Kubuswoningen) by architect Piet Blom stand on Overblaak, directly above Blaak metro station. A plan of 1977 envisaged 55 houses; in the end 38 small cubes and two larger "super cubes" were built. Each cube sits tilted on a hexagonal pylon. One dwelling has about 100 square metres on three levels: a triangular living space below, bedrooms above and, at the top, a pyramid-shaped room with 18 windows.

One resident, who owns the show cube Kijk-Kubus, gives paid tours to visitors. The super cubes were converted into a hostel by 2009, and a chess museum opened underneath in 2006. View the houses from the square and from the nearby Markthal. Around 45 minutes is enough for the exterior and the show cube.
