Its age is disputed: luminescence dating points to a date between AD 700 and 1110, and the earliest written mention is from 1694. The hillside has belonged to the National Trust since 1920, and the figure has been a scheduled monument since 1924. Giant Hill also holds The Trendle, an Iron Age earthwork.
