A village wedged beneath jagged sandstone pinnacles in the Lucanian Dolomites, with stone houses stacked up the slope. The road in is winding, so allow time, and walk the old stepped paths for the best views of the rocks.

Castelmezzano lies in Basilicata, in the Gallipoli Cognato and Piccole Dolomiti Lucane Regional Park. The sandstone rock formations of the Lucanian Dolomites were shaped by millennia of erosion. The village is counted among the "most beautiful villages in Italy" and clings to the steep rock. Access is by road, with paid parking at the entrance to the village; the lanes are reserved for pedestrians.

The village is known for the "Volo dell'Angelo" (Angel's Flight), a zip-line flight between Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa. The two lines are 1,378 m and 1,550 m long; participants glide up to 400 m above the ground at speeds of up to 120 km/h. The flight operates seasonally, so check the operating days before you travel. On foot, the Path of the Seven Stones links the two villages in about 90 minutes over roughly 2 km.
