# Cascate del Varone

A waterfall plunging into a narrow limestone gorge just above Lake Garda, reached by walkways bolted to the rock. Expect spray and a cool, damp air, so bring a light jacket even on hot days.

The Varone Waterfall plunges into an almost 100 m deep vertical gorge near Tenno, about 3 km from Riva del Garda. The gorge was carved out of the limestone by water erosion over some 20,000 years. The fall itself measures roughly 40 m in its lower section. The site opened to visitors on 20 June 1874, with walkways and steps making it accessible. The monumental entrance building, however, was designed only in the early 20th century by the architect Giancarlo Maroni.

The paths link two grottoes, and more than 100 steps lead up to the upper one. There is also a terraced botanical garden. Allow about an hour for the full circuit. The site is open almost all year round, although opening times change with the season. Free parking is available for cars and coaches.
