A small bayou town known for crawfish and Cajun dancing, with antique shops and cafes along Main Street. Stop at lunchtime for a plate of étouffée and ask locally about live music that evening.

Breaux Bridge lies on Bayou Teche and has about 7,500 residents (2020 census). Its name comes from a footbridge that the Acadian Firmin Breaux built across the bayou in 1799. His daughter-in-law Scholastique Breaux, the widow of his son Agricole, officially founded the town in 1829 and sold lots to Acadian settlers. Today the town calls itself the "Crawfish Capital of the World" (in French, "La Capitale Mondiale de l'Écrevisse"), a title the Louisiana legislature made official in 1959, and the Crawfish Festival is held every year.

The town center is easy to explore on foot, and lunchtime is a good moment for a break with regional cuisine. Expect larger crowds during the Crawfish Festival. One to two hours is enough for a stroll. The town is part of the Lafayette metropolitan area and combines well with a visit to Vermilionville.
