A small medieval church on the slopes of Vitosha, listed as World Heritage for its frescoes. Entry is limited to small groups, so go early and expect a short wait in busy months.

Boyana Church stands in the Boyana district of Sofia and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. It was built in three stages: the eastern part dates from the late 10th or early 11th century, the middle part from the mid-13th century, and the western extension from the mid-19th century. The middle section was commissioned by Sebastokrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava. The frescoes of 1259, with a total of 89 scenes and 240 human figures, are famous and rank among the best-preserved medieval paintings in the Balkans.

To protect the frescoes, entry is strictly controlled: groups are small, visits are short, and the interior climate is kept at 17 to 18 °C. Arrive early and expect a wait in high season. About an hour is enough for the church and its surroundings. Check the current access rules in advance.
