Underground tunnels carved into the rock below the old fortress of Luxembourg City, with openings that look over the Alzette valley. Bring a light jacket, as it stays cool inside, and add the nearby Corniche promenade.

On the Bock rock, Count Siegfried acquired the castle of Lucilinburhuc in 963 and began to expand it; from this grew the fortress city of Luxembourg. The casemates in the rock were begun in the 17th century and extended under Austrian rule from 1745. They had room for a garrison of 1,200 soldiers and about 50 cannon. Together with the Pétrusse casemates, the tunnel network originally exceeded 17 kilometres and reached up to 40 metres deep. In the Second World War the tunnels could shelter up to 35,000 people.

The casemates have been open to visitors since 1933, and the old town with its fortifications has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994. Through the openings in the rock you look out over the Alzette valley. It stays cool inside, so a light jacket is sensible. Allow about an hour and combine the visit with a walk along the nearby Corniche.
