A complete ring of medieval granite walls with dozens of towers around the old town. Walk a section of the wall-walk, then see it from the Cuatro Postes viewpoint across the river at sunset.

The walls of Ávila are 2,516 metres long, around 3 metres thick and about 12 metres high, enclosing some 33 hectares of the old town. According to the city, they have 87 towers, nine gates and two small gateways; other sources count 88 towers. They rank among the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the world. Scholars disagree on when they were built: either the late 11th century, or mainly the second half of the 12th to the early 13th century. The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.

You can enter the wall walk at three points: the Casa de las Carnicerías, the Puerta del Alcázar and the Puerta del Puente. Audio guides are available in seven languages. A short section is enough to get a feel for it, but the walls are also pleasant to walk around from the outside. The old town is easy to explore on foot.
