A lagoon-side city of tiled façades, Art Nouveau houses and a central canal where colourful moliceiro boats ride. Take a short boat trip, then try the local sweet ovos moles near the canal.

Aveiro lies about 70 kilometres from Porto on the edge of a lagoon. Four canals run through the centre, carrying the colourful moliceiros, boats originally used to gather seaweed (moliço) for fertiliser. Today they offer tours of around 45 minutes. A route leads past some 28 Art Nouveau buildings with floral tiles, wrought iron and stained-glass windows.

The town's speciality is ovos moles, a filling of egg yolk and sugar encased in thin wafers shaped like shells or boats. They go back to convents in the region, and the product has carried the EU “protected geographical indication” since 2008. You can buy them in the pastry shops of the old town. Half a day to a full day is enough for the canals, a boat trip and the old town; the town is reachable from Porto by train or in about 50 minutes by car.
