# Arachova

A stone-built mountain village on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, with steep lanes, a clock tower and views over the valley. Good for a stop on the way to Delphi; bring a warm layer even in spring and autumn.

Arachova lies at around 970 m on the southern flank of Mount Parnassus, about 8 km east of Delphi. At the 2021 census the municipal unit had 2,439 inhabitants. The town is known for its "black wine", colourful woven goods, rugs and the protected cheese Formaela. In 1826 Greek forces under Georgios Karaiskakis defeated Ottoman troops here.

The ivy-covered bell tower with its large clock is worth a look. The feast of the patron saint, St George, is celebrated on 23 April. In winter Arachova is popular because of the nearby Parnassos ski centre; in summer and autumn it makes a good stop on the way to Delphi. Allow one to two hours for a stroll around the town. Because of the altitude it can be cool even in spring and autumn, so pack a warm layer.
