The remains of what was once among the largest churches in Christendom, with a surviving transept tower and cloister buildings in the small town. A short walk through the town helps you picture the original scale.

The Benedictine abbey of Cluny was founded in 909 or 910 by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, and answered directly to the pope. Abbot Hugh of Semur began the third church, Cluny III, in 1088; at 187 m long it was the largest church in the West until St Peter's in Rome was rebuilt. At its height the order comprised around 1,200 establishments. After the Revolution the abbey was sold in 1798 and served as a stone quarry until 1813; less than 10% of Cluny III survived.

What remains are the Clocher de l'Eau bénite (Bell Tower of the Holy Water) and parts of the transepts. The 13th-century Farinier displays Romanesque capitals from the church. The tour adds reconstructions through digital media. A walk through the old town of Cluny helps you imagine the abbey's scale.
