# Rules that change for motorhomes: speed, lanes, parking and passengers

> A motorhome is legally a car in many respects, but weight, overhang, passengers and parking bring rules of their own that differ by country.

On paper, a motorhome is usually treated as a passenger vehicle, and in many countries nothing changes at the wheel. In practice a handful of rules depend on weight, size and use, and they differ by country. The 3.5-tonne line decides most of them, but overhang, passengers and parking bring their own questions, and fines abroad are collected on the spot or later by post.

What follows describes the common patterns and the points confirmed in the sources used; local rules change, so the national road authority or the club of the country concerned is the final check, especially for fines and for rules that apply only on certain roads.

## Speed limits and the weight class

In Germany the limits depend on the maximum permitted mass. According to the ADAC-run PiNCAMP guide, a motorhome up to 3.5 tonnes may drive 100 km/h on rural roads and has a recommended 130 km/h on motorways, a 3.5 to 7.5 tonne vehicle registered as a motorhome is limited to 80 km/h outside towns and 100 km/h on motorways, and above 7.5 tonnes the limits are 60 and 80 km/h. Within towns the limit is 50 km/h for all of them. Other countries use comparable classes, often with lower values for heavy vehicles, but the exact figures differ, so a general rule of thumb is that a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes should expect motorway limits below those for cars.

## Trailers, lanes and overtaking

Towing changes the limits again. Promobil notes that in Germany a trailer combination is limited to 80 km/h outside towns unless it has the special certification for 100 km/h, and that on some multi-lane roads outside towns vehicles with a trailer may use the left lane only to turn left; the conditions are set out in section 7 of the German road traffic code. Many countries also post overtaking bans for heavy vehicles, shown by a sign with a lorry symbol. Whether a motorhome counts as a heavy vehicle for such a sign differs between countries and depends on its mass, so the sign text and the national rule have to be read rather than assumed. Where a ban refers to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, a motorhome at 3,500 kg is normally outside it, while a heavier one may fall inside it, depending on the country and how it is registered.

## Passengers, seat belts and children

Seat belts are mandatory in the front seats at all times, and in motorhomes with belts the same rules apply as in cars. According to ADAC, children younger than twelve or shorter than 150 centimetres need an appropriate child seat. It should be fitted on a forward-facing seat whose belt system is approved for child seats, rear-facing and side seats being possible only when all forward-facing seats are taken. Children must never lie in the sleeping area while the vehicle is moving. Bed places are for sleeping at a standstill, not for travel, and the number of seats with belts, limits the number of passengers.

## Bike racks, overhang and warning boards

A loaded rear carrier changes the vehicle's dimensions, and the marking rules differ widely. According to the Swiss club TCS, Germany, Austria and France require marking only when the load projects more than one metre beyond the rear: in Germany a flag, cylinder or board of at least 30 by 30 centimetres, in France a red light as well after dark. Italy and Spain are stricter and ask for a striped warning panel for loads projecting rearwards. Italy changed its rules for hitch-mounted carriers in 2025, and reports on whether a panel is still needed differ, so the current national rule should be checked before departure. Because the load includes the bicycles on it, handlebars can push the total past one metre. The carrier must not hide the number plate or the rear lights, and where it does, repeat lights or a repeat plate may be needed.

## Gas, tunnels and bridges

Some tunnels and bridges restrict dangerous goods, and gas bottles are dangerous goods. The ADR agreement, according to guidance from Berlin's licensing authority, exempts private persons carrying gas for personal, domestic or recreational use, provided the contents cannot escape in normal transport. The exemption is meant for modest quantities for personal use and does not replace the signs at a tunnel entrance, so those should be obeyed, and valves should be closed while driving.

## Parking and sleeping

Parking rules matter more than driving rules for many travellers. In Italy, Article 185 of the road code lets a camper stop wherever other vehicles may, as long as it stays in driving configuration: on its wheels, with no discharge of liquids and not occupying space beyond its footprint. Awnings, tables, chairs and extended steps turn parking into camping, and municipalities can add night bans, time limits or size limits if these are signposted. In France, camping-cars may park and sleep on public roads like cars, but setting out stabilisers, an awning, a table or chairs turns parking into camping, which is not allowed on the public road, and communes can add local bans, so the signs on the spot decide.

## Before crossing a border

Practical points: look up the national limit for the vehicle's weight class and the rules on warning boards for the carrier, carry the registration papers, insurance card and licence, check how many seats have belts, plan overnight stops on an official pitch where the local signs say so, and keep stabilisers, awning and chairs stowed during a roadside stop.
