Slovenia, Croatia and Greece make a good autumn route for a motorhome, but each country handles tolls, overnight stays and ferries differently. This article lists what we could confirm from the sources below and marks the rest as something to check before you leave. We did not find official figures for every point, so where a number is missing it is missing on purpose.

## Slovenia: vignette or DarsGo

Slovenia uses an electronic vignette tied to your licence plate. According to ÖAMTC, vehicles up to 3.5 t fall into class 2A (under 1.30 m high at the front axle) or class 2B (over 1.30 m). The 2025/2026 prices quoted are 16, 32 and 117.50 euros for a week, a month and a year in class 2A, and 32, 64.10 and 235 euros in class 2B. A motorhome over 1.30 m high gets the cheaper 2A only if the living equipment is permanently installed and the registration shows body type SA; otherwise it counts as 2B, so check your registration papers. You can buy at evinjeta.dars.si, at petrol stations near the border or at motoring-club branches. Vehicles above 3.5 t are outside the vignette system and need a DarsGo on-board unit with distance-based tolls; we did not verify the rates. ÖAMTC names fines of 300 to 800 euros without a valid vignette. Check the official site for current rates and type the plate exactly.

## Croatia: tolls and speed

Croatian motorway tolls are distance-based. According to the camping magazine freeontour, you can pay in euros in cash or by card, vehicles fall into three categories, motorhomes up to 3.5 t belong to category 2 and heavier ones to category 3, and a Croatian transponder (ENC) gives access to faster lanes and saves a few per cent. The planned electronic system Crolibertas is reported to start in March 2027 at the earliest, with no exact date confirmed and a phased rollout, so expect toll booths this season. Check current prices on the operator’s site (hac.hr), we did not verify them.

The sources give no general speed limits for Croatia, only that younger drivers (under 25) face lower limits. For motorhomes up to 12 m freeontour says no special permit is needed. We could not confirm the limits for motorhomes above 3.5 t or with a trailer; look them up at HAK or ADAC before the trip and obey the signs.

## Bosnia and the Neum corridor

A short strip of coast at Neum belongs to Bosnia and Herzegovina and lies between the Croatian mainland and the Pelješac peninsula; the Neum Agreement is described on Wikipedia. According to freeontour, you can now reach Dubrovnik from the north without entering Bosnia via the Pelješac Bridge, and border checks still take place at the Croatian border with non-Schengen countries such as Bosnia. If you choose the road through Neum, you cross two borders within minutes. Which documents the vehicle needs (registration, insurance green card validity for Bosnia) we could not confirm: ask your insurer in advance and carry passports for everyone on board.

## Camping rules: Croatia and Greece

In Croatia, freeontour says overnight stays in a camping vehicle are not allowed outside official campsites or pitches, including on private land and public car parks, whether for one night or several. The article names no fine and we found no official figure; assume the penalty can be high and that controls are more frequent in season. For Greece, one press report (To Vima, June 2025) says the revised traffic code bans overnight stays, sleeping and cooking in camper vehicles outside campsites on beaches, in forests, parks, archaeological zones and municipal car parks, with a reported on-the-spot fine of 300 euros per person and up to 3,000 euros in court. We could not check the official text, so treat the details as unconfirmed and plan campsites or marked stopping places. Slovenia’s rules on overnight parking we did not check either.

## Ferries and gas

Croatian island ferries are run mainly by Jadrolinija, and Greece has many operators between the mainland and islands. We did not check timetables, prices or vehicle-length categories: book with exact length and height including bike rack and roof box. Gas is a question for every operator. Many ferry companies require gas bottles to be closed or the supply shut off during the crossing, some also ask for declarations; we could not confirm the rules of a specific company, so ask when you book and read the terms. Greek motorway tolls are paid at toll stations, but we did not verify the classes or amounts for motorhomes: check the operators before you plan a long route.

## Fire and October conditions

Summer brings a high risk of forest fires in Croatia and Greece, with restrictions on open flames and sometimes closed roads and evacuated campsites. We did not verify current rules; follow local warnings and the instructions of campsite staff, and never use a barbecue or gas stove outside permitted places in dry weather. In October the risk is lower, but the weather changes: the Bora, a cold gust wind on the Adriatic coast, can lead to warnings and, in exposed places, to restrictions for high-sided vehicles on bridges and coastal roads. We could not confirm which roads and which vehicle types are affected, so check the traffic service (HAK) on the day. Many campsites close at the end of September or October, and ferries run less often: confirm opening before you plan a route around a place.

Our plan for the route: buy the Slovenian vignette online before the border, carry euros for Croatian tolls, avoid the Neum border if time is short, book campsites in advance for the end of the season and check ferry rules for gas and length. Everything marked above as unverified is what you should settle with the operator or the authority before you drive.
