# What goes in a car emergency kit, and what is just clutter

Pre-built emergency kits are often full of items you will never use. A useful kit fits in a small duffel and covers the four most likely problems: a dead battery, a flat tire, getting stuck and waiting a long time for help.

## The essentials

Bring a lithium jump starter and a tire inflator that plugs into the 12V socket. Pack a basic tire-plug kit, a headlamp with spare batteries, a first-aid kit you have actually opened and a gallon of water. Add a space blanket for every seat.

## By season and region

In winter, add a folding shovel, traction mats and hand warmers. For desert trips, pack more water than you think you need and a shade cloth. In the mountains, carry chains if you might need them.

## Skip these

Leave out the cheap multi-tools that break the first time you use them, glow sticks when you already have a headlamp, and any kit you have never unpacked. Open everything once at home so you know what is there and that it works.
