## Route description

Leave Ljubljana, with its castle hill and dragon-guarded bridges over the Ljubljanica, south-west on the A1 motorway to Postojna. Slovenian motorways require an electronic vignette.

At Postojna Cave an electric train carries visitors deep into halls of stalactites, home of the blind olm. It is cool underground all year, so bring a warm layer.

Predjama Castle is a short drive away, built into the mouth of a cave halfway up a 123 m cliff. The limestone Karst plateau around it has small villages, stone walls and vineyards.

Continue to the coast and Piran, a Venetian port town with Tartini Square and narrow lanes on a small peninsula. The centre is closed to traffic, so use the car parks outside town and the shuttle bus.
