## Route description

Leave the city by the Harbour Bridge on SH1 and stop at the Waiwera Hot Pools, about 45 minutes north of central Auckland, for a soak by the beach. If time allows, spend the previous afternoon on the ferry to Devonport and North Head. The road ahead is a motorway as far as Warkworth, where the Johnstone Hills tunnels are the main bottleneck. Weekend traffic builds on Friday afternoons and on Sunday evenings, so avoid those times if you can.

From Warkworth, a 25 km road leads to Leigh and the Goat Island Marine Reserve, where you can snorkel off the beach. Return towards Warkworth and turn to Matakana, with its Saturday market, wineries and cafés. Drive on to Tāwharanui Regional Park by the unsealed Takatu Road; the campground needs a reservation, so book ahead. Check beforehand whether the road is open, and do not take a long motorhome onto it.

Rejoin SH1 and drive north to Mangawhai, where the cliff walk starts from the Heads; it takes about three hours return and has steep parts. Continue to Waipu Cove, about 30 minutes further, a sheltered beach with a surf club and several holiday parks. Both Mangawhai and Waipu Cove are quiet in winter and busy in January, when the holiday parks are often fully booked. Carry sun protection and water on the cliff walk, as there is little shade.

The last stretch on SH1 runs through hill country to Whangārei, the largest town in Northland, with supermarkets, fuel and a marina basin. Whangārei Falls lie east of the centre on Ngunguru Road, with a short flat path from the car park. The whole drive is about 160 km, so it can be done in a day if needed, though a slower trip lets you enjoy the beaches. Fuel and food are available at every town along the way.

## Stop-by-stop itinerary

1. **Auckland** (New Zealand)
2. **North Head (Maungauika), Devonport** (Auckland, New Zealand): A volcanic headland at the harbour entrance, riddled with old military tunnels and gun emplacements, with views to the city and Rangitoto. The ferry from downtown takes about 12 minutes. Walk up from Devonport, where cafés line the main street.
3. **Waiwera Hot Pools** (Warkworth, New Zealand): Thermal pools beside a beach north of Auckland, warmed by a natural hot spring, with private pools and slides. It is a convenient first or last stop of a trip. Check opening times and book for weekends.
4. **Warkworth** (New Zealand)
5. **Goat Island Marine Reserve** (Warkworth, New Zealand): The country’s first marine reserve, near Leigh, where fish are used to people. Snorkel off the beach or ride a glass-bottom boat. The road from Warkworth is 25 km; weekends in summer are crowded and parking is tight.
6. **Matakana Village and Market** (Warkworth, New Zealand): A small village with a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings, wineries, breweries and a cinema, a short drive from Warkworth. The market is busy in summer, so arrive early to park. Many wine estates are within a few minutes’ drive.
7. **Tāwharanui Regional Park** (Warkworth, New Zealand): A peninsula sanctuary behind a predator-proof fence, with beaches, coastal walks, forest birds and a campground. The road from Matakana is partly unsealed. Dogs are not allowed in the park, and the campground needs a reservation.
8. **Mangawhai Cliff Walk** (Mangawhai, New Zealand): A coastal path along farmland and sea cliffs from Mangawhai Heads towards Bream Bay, with views of islands offshore. It takes about three hours return and has steep sections. Wear sturdy shoes, and check the tide and weather before you set off.
9. **Waipu Cove Beach** (Mangawhai, New Zealand): A sheltered white-sand beach with a surf life saving club and rock pools at the southern end. It is a short drive off SH1 and suits a lunch stop or an overnight at the nearby holiday parks. Swim between the flags in summer.
10. **Whangārei** (New Zealand)
11. **Whangarei Falls** (Whangārei, New Zealand): A 26-metre waterfall on the Hātea River, with a flat path to the viewing area and a loop track past the top and bottom of the drop. The car park is close to the falls. Swimming in the pool below is popular in summer.
